Forbes, Robert Langreth, February 20, 2008: In progress toward a stem-cell treatment for diabetes, researchers at a small San Diego biotech company have devised a procedure for turning human embryonic stems cells into insulin-producing cells inside mice. Numerous researchers have been trying to figure out how to convert embryonic stem cells into insulin-producing cells that could be used to treat diabetics. But progress has been slow because scientists don’t know the recipe for stimulating immature stem cells to differentiate into the highly specialized pancreatic islet cells, the cells that are destroyed in Type 1 diabetes. Read entire article »
